Jane Austen was born on December 16, 1775 at Steventon rectory. She was the seventh child born of eight and only the second daughter born to George and Cassandra Austen.

  • When Jane is only a few months old, she was placed with Elizabeth Littlewood, who nursed Jane for about a year. In 1783, both Jane and her sister, Cassandra, were sent to Oxford to be educated by Mrs. Ann Cawley.
  • Both Jane and Cassandra were sent to a boarding school, but they returned home because the Austens could not afford to send both of their girls.
  • Jane Austen acquired the remainder of her education by reading books that were guided by her father and her brothers, James and Henry.
  • Throughout her young childhood, Jane held little private theatricals for her family and close friends as part of her education.
  • Life in the Austen home was lived in "an open, amused, easy intellectual atmosphere".

Interesting facts
  • Jane Austen never married.
  • When Jane was twenty years, she met and fell in love with a man named Tom Lefroy, but were not allowed to marry because neither of them had any money.
  • One of Jane's brothers, George was said to have been deaf and a mute.
  • Cassandra, Jane's only sister, never married just like Jane.
  • Jane died on July 8, 1817 at the age of 41.
